ADA Committee Helps Campus Keep Commitment to Access Executive Memorandum 99-21 states California State University, Chico is committed to the full and total inclusion of all members of the campus community in all educational and operational aspects of campus life. In accordance with Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, CSU, Chico adopted a policy of nondiscrimination to ensure that any person with a disability will not, on the basis of that disability, be denied access to or enjoyment of any program, service, or opportunity provided by the campus. Since the ADA was passed more than a decade ago, the campus ADA Committee has strived to improve access. Easily recognized are Braille signage in buildings, automatic door openers, accessible restrooms, the reopening of the Gus Manolis Bridge, the installation of a swimming pool lift, the development of the Assistive Technology Center, and modifications to classrooms such as Holt 170. This summer, the lobby to Harlen Adams Theatre was remodeled to include a downstairs womens restroom. The entrance to the seating area was also remodeled for easier access. Upcoming projects include accessible seating arrangements in Harlen Adams Theatre and Laxson Auditorium. Besides improving physical access, the campus is hard at work improving Web access. While the Web has made life easier for people with certain disabilities, it is especially difficult for those with visual impairments who rely on screen-reader software to surf the Web. In addition to staff and faculty with disabilities, there are currently more than 550 students registered with Disability Support Services. Four out of five of these students have a hidden disability. For every student with a mobility impairment, there are four students with a hidden disability. Hidden disabilities include learning and psychological disorders, diabetes, and cancer. The ADA Committee invites you to participate in the many activities occurring
during Disability Awareness Month. Scheduled workshops include working
with deaf students, providing reasonable accommodations, and an open house
at the Assistive Technology Center. Please see the calendar for the times
and locations of these events.} Jeanette Alosi, Chair
