Cindy Wolff Receives Outstanding Dietetics Educator Award

Cindy Wolff, Ph.D., M.P.A., R.D., was selected as the 2001 Outstanding Dietetics Educator by both the California Dietetics Association and the American Dietetics Association.

A professor in the Department of Biological Science’s Nutrition and Food Sciences Program (NFSC), Wolff earned her master’s degree in public administration at CSU, Chico in 1982 and her doctorate in nutritional sciences from Colorado State University in 1987. Wolff says she has “a passion for teaching.” She devotes much of her time to developing lectures, teaching materials, and in-class activities. She has been instrumental in incorporating the use of technology into the NFSC curriculum and is the driving force behind current efforts by NFSC to develop a laptop computer laboratory.

Strengthening the partnership between CSU, Chico and K-12 students is an important teaching interest for Wolff. She mentors student interns in her Project K.I.D.S. (Kindling Ideas for Dietary Skills) in local schools. She has partnered with the Chico Unified School District’s Learn and Serve and Nutritional Services Programs on several nutrition education proposals.

Along with two other NFSC faculty, Faye Johnson and Deb Bellis, Wolff has recently been awarded $70,000 in off-campus funding to develop O.P.T. for Fit Kids, an overweight prevention and treatment program for Butte County children. This program provides paid internships for six NFSC undergraduate and graduate students.

Wolff stresses that the NFSC as a whole makes teaching a top priority. The program was awarded a CELT-sponsored High Quality Learning Environment Award for 2001.
