Hip-Hop, Pizza, and New Buddies :Mentor Program Launched for Young Men of Color

Anne Fadiman

High school students Sami Fisum, Josh Patten, and Maki Rice, mentor Tony Davis, students Jacob Noel, and mentors Nataka White and Billy Jenkins attended the first Mentors for Young Men of Color activity on Oct. 11. Mentors are paired with a high school student to encourage them in their education.

With all the things teenage guys like—music, food, and hangin’ with friends—a new mentoring program kicked off on campus Oct. 11 and 12. The program, created by the Center for Multicultural and Gender Studies (MCGS), reaches out to young men of color to encourage them to continue their education. Chico State and Butte College students offer their high school partners friendship and academic support.

A group of about 15 local high school students and their mentors attended the first event, which included learning about the university, financial aid, and strategies for getting a good education. Carol Burr, director of the Center for Multicultural and Gender Studies, said of the program’s kickoff: “I think it was a great start to what we hope is a pipeline for young men of color into college.”

The high school students will continue to interact with their college mentors throughout the school year and return for another campus activity in the spring. The mentors will talk about their experiences and give ideas for future programs to the MCGS community advisory board at a meeting on Nov. 5.
