Halloween: A Mixed BagDowntown Chico experienced a hellish Halloween, including four stabbings and more than 60 arrests. The university escaped relatively unscathed in terms of property damage, but a reported sexual assault at one of the residence halls underscores the dark side of Halloween revelry. In terms of property, a glass door was broken at Ayres Hall, and Kendall Hall was vandalized with graffiti, said Don Sleeper, Facilities Management and Services. This damage was light compared to other years, Sleeper said. Kelly Clark, interim chief of the University Police, said that because there were more police patrolling on and off campus, the night, overall, was relatively successful. It was a very busy night for us, said Clark. He went on to say, however, that the one serious incident was the sexual assault. The Associated Students, along with several other university organizations,
sponsored a free barbecue (500 burgers were served in one hour!), as well
as an alcohol-free night of contests, games, music, and dancing. The event
was open to anyone over 18, and approximately 700 people attended, according
to Amber Johnsen, A.S. president. It just goes to show students
are ready for a change in Chico. They are ready for an alternative,
Johnsen said. Lisa Kirk
