If you were on campus the weekend of Oct. 20 and 21, you might have noticed white flying discs soaring above the athletic fields. CSU, Chico mens and womens Ultimate teams hosted their third annual fall invitational tournament. Eighteen teams, including a Chico State alumni team, came to Chico to enjoy seasonably warm weather and fast action play.
CSU, Chicos womens team, the Chicas, upset the nationally ranked University of Oregon squad in the finals of the womens pool. Chica captain Shanna Thompson recruited new talent this fall, which has added to the quick success of the team. The men fielded two teams. One team lost a tough semifinal match to Humboldt State, who lost to Stanford in a closely contested final.
If you missed the tournament, youll have to wait until next year to catch visiting Ultimate teams in Chico. The annual invitational hosted the only home games the teams play in the yearlong season. Last season, the mens team chalked up more than 70 games and more than 10,000 miles of travel. If you are interested in checking the teams out, they practice Monday and Tuesday evenings on the stadium field.
