Enrollment: The numbers are in

CSU, Chico has squeezed 16,000 students onto campus this spring (14,020 FTE), which is approximately 600 more students than last spring. Bob Hannigan, vice provost for Enrollment Management, said that undergraduate applications for fall 2002 are closed and fewer students will be accepted. “Given limited resources for next year, we expect to enroll approximately 500 fewer students than we enrolled this academic year,” said Hannigan. The Office of Admissions reports that approximately 3,000 applications were returned, and the acceptance index (a combination of SAT scores and grades) has been raised from 3,000 last year to 3,300 for fall 2002.

Chico team to represent U.S. at Model UN

CSU, Chico’s Model United Nations Club has been selected to represent the United States in the 2002 National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in New York City this March. The conference hosts more than 2,700 students from universities around the world. According to Mark Bourgeois, club president, “Schools are awarded country selections from the NMUN based on academic performance and past Model UN performance. Chico State being asked to represent the United States, considered the most difficult country to represent, reflects well on our university.” Last year, Chico delegates won two top awards for the second year in a row.

High-tech research for original Bidwell buildings

The Archaeological Research Program (ARP) received a $27,000 grant from the California Department of Parks and Recreation to locate traces of historic Bidwell Ranch structures—without digging. The ARP will do background research about the grounds; high-tech specialists will create digitized pictures based on the results of the research. Remote sensing experts will then use state-of-the-art technology to “see into the soil” (through a high-sensitivity cesium vapor magnetometer); digital grids and maps will be generated from the remote sensing fieldwork. Greg White, Department of Anthropology, will direct students in this research project.

New curator for Museum of Anthropology

Adrienne Scott is the new curator of the Museum of Anthropology. Scott has been with the museum, located in Langdon Hall, since late November. She has a degree in anthropology from Indiana University and has worked at the Smithsonian and the Museum of Science in Miami. She works with students in museum studies under the direction of professors Stacy Schaefer and Georgia Fox to design and develop exhibits, and provide tours and hands-on activities for the community. Scott said, “The museum is a teaching museum. It puts the world in our grasp. We have an opportunity to bring a cross-cultural perspective of diversity home to people of all ages.”
