Lazzarini Leaves a Legacy

It’s difficult to say goodbye to good friends. Chico State mourns the passing of Mary Ann Lazzarini, head women’s basketball coach. Lazzarini died Feb. 21. She was 49.

Lazzarini returned to coaching this season after being sidelined last year while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer. On Jan. 16, Lazzarini announced to her team that her cancer had returned and that she would take another leave of absence. Just five weeks later, her team was informed of her death as they readied for practice. Although the players were devastated, they followed Lazzarini’s wishes and did not postpone any of their games.

In an Aug. 14, 2001, interview with Inside Chico State, Lazzarini explained her coaching philosophy: “I try to build self-esteem,” she said. “And I try to help them grow as a person—not just a basketball player.” She spoke of being a mentor and friend to her players, a role she took to heart. “I like to be a communicator with the players. Not just as a basketball coach, but as a friend, because there are a lot of things going on inside them … A lot happens with kids, you know, not just schooling, personal things.”

Lazzarini, affectionately known as “M.A.” to her players and friends, was in her 13th year as the Wildcats’ head coach. After two years on the court as a Wildcat (she holds the school record for steals in a game), Lazzarini spent 14 years as an associate coach for the women’s basketball team before being named head coach in 1989. Lazzarini also coached women’s field hockey for 11 years.

A memorial service was held for Lazzarini on March 9 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Several eulogies were given, including thoughts from assistant coach Michele Massari. An informal gathering was held at Acker Gym after the service for friends and family to celebrate “M.A.’s” legacy of friendship, compassion, and dedication to her players.
