Movin' On Up
Five floors is a loooong way up when you're lugging unwieldy boxes and it's hotter than heck. After checking out the crazy lines at the elevator, first-time student Kaylee Schaffert figured the stairs were her best bet. Schaffert single-handedly packed in all of her belongings to her new "home" on the fifth floor of Whitney Hall.
Schaffert joined approximately 1,500 other students moving into residence halls on campus and in University Village on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 22 and 23. The residence halls are full, and there is a short waiting list. An additional 300 first-time students will live in university housing off campus.
Housing staff, student move-in volunteers, and an alumni market greeted the students and their parents as they moved in on Wednesday and Thursday during the week before classes began.
"Moving-in day is a fun, exciting, and stressful day. We try to make the experiences a good one for students and parents. We want the parents to feel good about leaving their students in the university's hands," said Larry Bassow, Housing and Food Service.
Parents also joined their students, in larger numbers than ever, in Getting Connected activities, including a barbecue on Friday and an Alumni and Parent Relations farewell brunch on Sunday.
