While you were away...CSU, Chico's students continued to shine throughout the summer, thanks, in large part, to dedicated faculty. Year round, advisers, coaches, and mentors go far beyond the call of duty to guide students through training and competitions. The end result? Tremendous success by students and vivid expressions of high-quality education at CSU, Chico. The Orion is the best in the nation
The Orion has been named the nation's best college newspaper by the National Newspaper Association (NNA). In August, the paper was awarded first place for general excellence based on three issues published in 2001. The award will be presented Sept. 13 during the NNA's 116th annual convention in Portland, Oregon. The Orion also received first place in general excellence in the 2001 Better Newspapers Contest held by the California Newspaper Publishers Association (CNPA). The award was presented at CNPA's annual convention in June in San Diego. The award marked the fourth straight time and seventh time in eight years that The Orion has won first place in CNPA's University Division. "The Orion simply stands above all other college newspapers in California because of our students' commitment to quality journalism," said adviser Dave Waddell. Steel bridge builders compete nationally
A team of CSU, Chico civil engineering students and their adviser, Joel Arthur, professor of civil engineering, traveled to Madison, Wisconsin, in June for the national Steel Bridge Competition. The team finished in the top 5 percent. In April, the team won the regional bridge building competition for the sixth consecutive year. "The competition is unparalleled as a learning task, as it demands that students apply and test theoretical concepts related to the analysis, design, and performance optimization of structures," said Arthur. |
Chico's SIFE team one of top three in U.S.A.CSU, Chico's SIFE team was named second runner-up in the four-year division and received $9,000 at the 2002 SIFE USA National Exposition, held in May in Missouri. One hundred and fifty-three regional champion teams presented their educational outreach programs to more than 750 national business leaders and entrepreneurs, who judged how well they taught others the principles of free enterprise. Curt DeBerg, professor of accounting, was named a Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow for mentoring the students. DeBerg has worked with the team for nine years. Under his guidance, the Chico team won top honors in the nation in 1999. Golfer on a hot streakJ.J. Jakovac, a junior from Napa, recently competed in the prestigious United States Golf Association Amateur Championship in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in August. Jakovac also qualified for the Northern California Golf Association Amateur Championship and for the USGA Amateur Public Links Championship. Jakovac won the NCAA Division II Individual Championship in Florida in May to cap a grand season that included six tournament wins and California Collegiate Athletic Association Golfer of the Year honors. In a conference full of talented athletes, Jakovac was named the 2001 - 02 CCAA Athlete of the Year. "J.J.'s raw talent and competitive attitude are a joy to coach," said CSU, Chico golf coach Keith Thomas. "He's a leader on and off the golf course." |
