Chancellor Okays Modern Jewish Studies B.A.
Chancellor Charles Reed signed off on a modern Jewish studies major two weeks ago that has been seven years in the making. The new B.A. will be offered collaboratively by CSU, Chico, San Diego State University, and San Francisco State University.
Sam Edelman, CSU, Chico; Lawrence Baron, San Diego State; and Laurie Zolloth, SF State, discussed the major when they met at a conference in 1996. Each of their universities offered a core in Jewish studies, but none had enough to comprise a major.
The CSU is one of the largest state universities in the world and educates a majority of students in California. "We believe students should have the option of learning about the oldest religion and culture in the world. The history, culture, literature, and politics of Judaism have had significant impact on the world," said Edelman, director of the program at Chico.
The program will begin officially in fall of 2003, although there are students at each university already beginning course work for the major.
Environmental Pioneer to Visit Campus
David Orr, pioneer in environmental literacy, will visit the CSU, Chico campus Sept. 12 - 13 for the 2002 Jack Rawlins Environmental Literacy Lecture. Orr is the director of the Environmental Studies Program at Oberlin College in Ohio and the author of three books, including The Nature of Design and Earth in Mind. "David Orr is the foremost authority on education about the environment," said Mark Stemen, professor and coordinator of the Environmental Studies Program. Orr will give a public lecture, "Ecology, Culture, and Human Intention," on Sept. 12 at 7 pm in the BMU auditorium. He will also present "Education and the Making of a World that Works" on Sept. 13 at 4 pm in Holt 170. Orr's talk will cover the emerging field of ecological design and its implications for education.
