Free Speech In Action

The Free Speech Area fulfilled its purpose at a September 11 memorial for victims of the World Trade Center tragedy. A solemn tolling of bells, a sorrowful rendition of Taps, and moving spoken tributes shared the space with patriotic apparel, American flags, a line of sign holders cautioning against war, and an instance of heckling. Student Paige Johnson said that Taps focused her attention on the victims, and she persuaded the crowd to join hands in a moment of unity and silence.
