A Letter from Bill Allen

Bill Allen is also known as Lt. Col. William 'Lo' Allen, Army of Northern Virginia,
Bill Allen is also known as Lt. Col. William "Lo" Allen, Army of Northern Virginia, Confederate States of America (ReEnactors of the American Civil War). Allen has foregone a haircut or beard trim since mid-summer in anticipation of an upcoming battle reenactment. He looks authentic--Lincolnesque, one might say.

Staff Council Chair, 1995-2002

I enjoyed my time as Staff Council chair and have learned a lot about the university, its structure, organization, and how decisions are made. I have a lot more respect for administrators who are in key decision-making roles.

My most memorable times as chair include my first year -- I was pretty nervous and there was a steep learning curve. My first Spring Awards Luncheon marked the 25th anniversary of the event. There was such a sea of faces to look out upon, but things went smoothly (thank you very much, Shirley Rabo). My last Spring Awards Luncheon ("I have delivered my people to the promised auditorium") in the new BMU auditorium was rewarding -- that's quite a venue to show off the staff of the university.

Of course there are many more moments from the last seven years for which I will always have fond memories.

I am deeply indebted to the Staff Council Executive Committee and all of the Staff Council members. As I take a little time to reflect, what I remember the most are the people -- the staff, the administrators, the faculty, and the students. These are the four key components to our university, and when one of these components is missing then the rest are diminished as a result. I leave the Staff Council chair position with a good feeling and knowing that there will be more great things in the future for Staff Council.

I believe that Stuart King will keep the council moving down the distinguished path that has been laid out for it by staff members who have participated in council activities. Stuart will lead in his own way, and I'm sure his ideas and directions will be of great benefit to the council.

-- Bill Allen
