Duane Knudson, Physical Education and Exercise Science, co-authored "Effect of Type 3 (Oversize) Tennis Ball on Serve Performance and Upper Extremity Muscle Activity," published in Sports Biomechanics Vol. 1, No. 2, 2002. He also co-authored "A Method to Determine Stride Length for Baseball Pitching," published in Applied Research in Coaching and Athletics Annual Vol. 17, 2002.
Michael Perelman, Economics, will have Scarcity, Extraction, and Value in Economic Theory published by Palgrave in the near future.
Graham Thurgood, English, had "Learnability and Direction of Convergence in Cham: The Effects of Long-Term Contact on Linguistic Structures" published in the Proceedings of the 2000 Western Conference on Linguistics.
Aiping Zhang, English, had "The Life and Work of Michael Collins" published in 21st-Century British and Irish Novelists, a new volume for the Dictionary of Literary Biographies released by Gale Research in October.
Grants and Contracts
Michelle Neyman, Biological Sciences, and Steve Shive, Health and Community Services, received $25,000 from the Shasta County Public Health Department and California Project Leaders Encouraging Activity and Nutrition to increase fruit consumption among female students in Butte College's Extended Opportunity Program and Services.
Jim Pushnik, Biological Sciences, received $28,869 from UC Davis for remote sensing of mineral and crude petroleum stresses in plants.
Awards and Activities
Jim Dwyer, Library Collection Management, presented "Southwestern Ecodefense and Ecofiction: How Does Your Xeriscape Grow?" at the Western Literature Association in Tucson, Arizona, in October.
Don Graham, Counseling Center, is the new chair of the statewide Organization of Counseling Center Directors in Higher Education, which includes directors from approximately 60 institutions including the CSU system, the UC system, and many private colleges and universities.
Kris Johnson, Library Instruction Program, was appointed to the membership committee of the California Association of Research Libraries.
Troy Jollimore, Philosophy, and Don D. Miller, Foreign Languages and Literatures, were selected by a subcommittee of the Faculty Recognition and Support Committee to submit their 2003 Summer Stipends proposals to the National Endowment for the Humanities for its $5,000 stipends. Jollimore's proposal is "The Enigma of Loyalty: A Philosophical Inquiry," and Miller's proposal is "Fame, Fortune, and Glory or Three Women and Their Men: Interpreting the Lives of Renaissance Icons."
