In on the Ground Floor: Sexuality Fair a Success

Students in Linda Bilsborough’s Human Sexuality (HCSV 111) course were presenters and participants at CSU, Chico’s first “Sexuality Fair,” at the end of the fall 2002 semester. HCSV 111 is an upper-division general education course designed to provide a comprehensive overview of sexuality issues crucial to college-aged students. Display topics included contraception, sexually transmitted infection prevention, sexual orientation, reproduction, sexual dysfunctions, and gender development.

The project was designed to allow students the opportunity to research and accurately present information on a wide variety of sexual issues in an educational, health fair-like atmosphere. After setting up their own display boards with accompanying brochures, students evaluated the efforts of their peers. Student response to the project was overwhelmingly supportive, according to Bilsborough. They reported that the visual displays and brochures made a strong impact that reinforced course objectives.

A spring “Sexuality Fair” will be expanded to include the general student population and will be held Tuesday, May 6, 9:30 am–noon in BMU 210.
