Stravinsky in a Groove

Faculty trumpeters extraordinaire Richard Winslow and Rocky Winslow
(no relation) will perform Stravinsky’s Octet for Winds, Feb. 9
at 2 pm in Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall. Rocky Winslow joined the music
faculty last fall as the new director of jazz studies. Stravinsky is not
exactly the typical gig for a jazz guy fresh from Las Vegas, so, even
though Rocky Winslow went to school on a classical scholarship, “times
change,” he said, “so I’ll definitely be scraping rust.”
In jazz terms, Rocky says Stravinsky classifies as “Super Bad,”
which piques one’s curiosity about the two Winslows’ forthcoming
interpretation of the lovely octet. The trumpeters will be backed by members
of the North State Symphony.
Guest violinist Terrie Baune, associate concertmaster of the Oakland-East
Bay Symphony, will perform Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 96 for violin
and piano with faculty member and concert pianist John Milbauer. “[This
piece] shows a turn toward writing that is more lyrical, reflective, and
profound,” said Milbauer. “It is enormously difficult from
an interpretive standpoint” (and, quite possibly, also “Super
Bad.”)
Soprano Daun Hayes will sing Edvard Grieg’s art songs (Grieg: “Hope
is the most beautiful feeling we have! Long live hope!”). This is
chamber music, folks, which is music intended for performance in a small
audience hall without a conductor. See calendar for ticket information.
