New BMU Gallery Devoted to Student Art
|

We Meet Our Consumption Needs
in Dozens, Ulises Meza. Welded steel, 2003.
|
The BMU’s new third floor art gallery is tucked away from the
chatter and clatter downstairs. It’s flooded with natural light
from a bank of high windows and even has a few comfortable chairs.
Lisa Perry, graduate student in social sciences with an emphasis in student
services, is the A.S. program coordinator of the gallery. Perry surveyed
art faculty last semester about the need for gallery space devoted exclusively
to student artwork. “Everyone said the space was very needed and
it would be a great opportunity for students,” Perry said. Many
art faculty members as well as people from the larger art community attended
the debut reception Jan. 27.
The artwork of CSU, Chico’s first M.F.A. students, Joliene Dexter,
Juliane Doerr, Atsushi Iwai, and Ulises Meza, is featured in the gallery’s
debut exhibition, which closes Feb. 13. “I wanted to highlight our
top artists,” Perry said. “Their work is amazing.”
Equations: a public art show, featuring the work of undergraduate Aaron
Knight, opens Feb. 25. Equations will be an interactive public art display.
“People will be able to take pieces of the artwork, which are marked
with a location,” Perry said. “Then they are to post the piece
at that location.”
Perry said the gallery is still to be named; fill out a suggestion form
at the counter if you’ve got a great idea. To find the gallery,
take the elevator next to the coffee cart in the mall or take the door
near the West Second Street entrance to the stairs. The gallery is an
open space next to the A.S. Computer Lab (BMU 301).
