For Staff Who Support Technology
CSU, Chico will host the sixth annual Conference for Academic Technology, March 19–22. The Community of Academic Technology staff and the CSU Center for Distribution Learning will sponsor the conference, which is open to staff from all 23 CSU campuses who support the use of technology in instruction. Workshop sessions include “Basic iMovie,” “History Live and Streamed on the Web,” and “Effective Use of Flash in a Learning Environment.” Workshop with the best title: “Using Your Noggin: Creative Technological Solutions to Pedagogical Dilemmas.”
Fast Food Nation Essay Winner
Students in Curtis DeBerg’s introductory accounting class competed in a Fast Food Nation essay contest with a $250 first prize put up by Students in Free Enterprise. The purpose of the essay was to give students the opportunity to relate their newly acquired business knowledge to the book, analyzing and critiquing it. In the winning essay, “Fast Food Nation: Dare to Enter,” Chitana Chou notes: “Behind the large signs and bright lights directing us toward inexpensive eating bliss are corporations narrowly focused on the bottom line, even if it means putting the safety of their customers and workers at risk.”
New Book on Bidwell
Mike Gillis and Mike Magliari, History, have just published John Bidwell and California: The Life and Writings of a Pioneer, 1841–1900 (Arthur H. Clarke Co.) Gillis and Magliari spent eight years researching and writing the book, which they describe as a “biographical anthology.” Each chapter focuses on an event or theme in Bidwell’s life and times. The Bidwell Mansion Visitors’ Center has copies for sale, as does the Associated Students Bookstore.
Retirement Tribute for Don GerthA retirement tribute for Donald R. Gerth will honor his 45 years of service to the California State University system. At CSU, Chico, Gerth served as vice president for Academic Affairs from 1970 to 1976 and also taught political science from 1964 to 1976.
The dinner and dance event will be held May 2 at the University Union Ballroom at CSU, Sacramento. Invitations are available this month by calling the CSU, Sacramento Office of University Affairs at (916) 278-7043.
Annual Staff and Faculty Art Show
This year’s staff and faculty art exhibition will be held April 7 through May 23; entries will be displayed in Kendall Hall. Artists must submit a notification form to Staff Council by March 28. This nonjuried exhibition is open to all employed or retired staff and faculty at CSU, Chico. Work in all media is eligible. Call Staff Council at x6156 for more information.
Debate Team Qualifies to Nationals
The CSU, Chico debate team competed at the District Qualifier and State Championship Tournament held Feb. 23 at California Polytecnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The varsity team of Monica Julian and Zach Justus qualified for the nationals in April. The junior varsity team of Nic Palmer and Chekechea Pryor were crowned Junior State Champions, after defeating Pepperdine University. Pryor also won the Top Speaker award for the third consecutive time.
