Briefly NotedReserves: ‘World-Class Living Laboratories’Jeff Mott has been appointed reserve manager of the Bidwell Environmental Institute. He is responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of Big Chico Creek Ecological and Butte Creek Ecological Reserves. “I will be working closely with Mark Stemen at the Butte Creek Ecological Reserve and Paul Maslin at the Big Chico Creek Reserve,” Mott said. “Mark and Paul have done an incredible amount of work on the reserves, and my role will help support their efforts.” Mott said they would like to increase educational opportunities and support research activities at the reserves, noting that “The university has an incredible opportunity to make our reserve properties into world-class living laboratories.” Mott served two years as the interim director of the Department of Environmental Management, Health, and Safety, as well as nine years as environmental manager. He earned degrees in biological science and chemical science in 1980 from CSU, Chico. Students Win with Cool AdsCSU, Chico communication design students won three gold awards and eight silver awards at the Addy Awards, an advertising copywriting competition held in March and sponsored by the Sacramento Advertising Club. The Addy Awards showcase the best in advertising skills from colleges and universities in the region. The students wrote original radio and TV scripts, as well as designed print ads. Prizes include a seven-night stay in Lake Tahoe, a watercolor painting, one cord of seasoned almond wood, cookies, chocolate, and gift certificates. FOA is a nonprofit group of CSU, Chico faculty and staff concerned about the welfare of animals. New Web Site for Prospective StudentsThe Office of Admissions staff have redesigned the Prospective Students Web site, using the latest technology in Web database systems to create a “personalized relationship” with prospective students. The personalization is based upon academic and extracurricular interests, and biographical data entered by the prospect. The site then displays relevant new articles; faculty, alumni, and student spotlights; surveys; and events. Visitors can also take a virtual tour of the campus. The Office of Admissions staff worked with enrollment management’s technical team and the Web guidelines committee to create the enhanced site. |
