For jazz cats, legendary jazz trumpet artist Shew needs no introduction.
For the rest of us, here’s the story: Shew has performed with all
the big band greats—from Tommy Dorsey to Woody Herman to Buddy Rich.
If you watched television at all in the ’70s, your ears were obliviously
graced with Shew’s genius. He worked as a studio musician in Los
Angeles for several years, until opportunity came knocking and he produced
Outstanding in His Field, his 1980 album that was nominated for a Grammy.
For the past three decades, Shew has performed and recorded with the elite
of the jazz world. He now spends most of his time on the road, conducting
clinics and inspiring jazz players all over the world.
Shew brings his killer grooves to CSU, Chico when he performs with Jazz
Express and Chicovana, under the direction of Rocky Winslow, on May 14
at Harlen Adams Theatre. Winslow, director of jazz studies, calls Shew
“one of my best friends, trumpet heroes, teacher, go-to-for-advice-on-anything-important-person
since 1985.”
“I can’t think of anything more important I could do for the
students in my jazz program,” Winslow says of inviting his friend
to Chico.
Shew will hold two clinics on May 15 in PAC 132, one on trumpet at 11
am and one on jazz improvisation at 1:30 pm. See calendar for concert
details.
