Rapunzel, Cinderella, Prince Charming, and other fairy tale characters cross paths in CSU, Chico’s spring musical Into the Woods, presented May 7–11 in Laxson Auditorium. This Tony Award-winning show tosses fairy tale characters into the story of a baker and his wife (portrayed by Tyler Bennett and Naomi Iversen, in photo above) who have been cursed with childlessness. To reverse the spell, they must go into the woods on several missions, where they meet Rapunzel et al.

Director Joel P. Rogers said the musical is entertaining and comical. But he also said the show provides a place “where darkness is confronted, and where uncertainty is resolved about who one is, or who one wants to be.” In other words, will any of the characters live “happily ever after”?

Into the Woods is set in a 1920s English garden. Head set designer Jaye Beetem has created a set with an art nouveau flair. North State Symphony maestro Kyle Wiley Pickett will conduct an intimate orchestra.

Into the Woods is presented by the School of the Arts and the Departments of Theatre Arts and Music. See calendar for ticket information.
