New Work from Old Forms
Cameron Crawford, Art and Art History, is exhibiting New Works now through Sept. 25 in the Humanities Center Gallery. The exhibit features traditional architectural and industrial forms. Crawford uses terra-cotta, bricks, tile, sewer and drainpipe, insulators, and sinks in these sculptures. He writes: "I am curious about the associations these objects carry from their traditional use and what meanings they can be imbued with through re-presenting them in unusual juxtapositions. I am particularly interested in what is suggested by objects that have been mended, recycled, or cobbled together in a society that favors the disposable and celebrates the latest model." Crawford's work has been in more than 50 exhibitions in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Taiwan. His sculpture is in private and public collections including the Mint Museum of Craft and Design in Charlotte, North Carolina. He has been an artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada; the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana; the Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts in Edgecombe, Maine; and the Taller Cultural in Santiago, Cuba. Crawford earned his M.F.A. from the University of Washington. See Exhibitions for more information.
