Symphony Goes Folk
Folk music blended with classical orchestra formats will be presented in The Folk Influence, the North State Symphony's first of four concerts for the 2003 - 2004 season. The Folk Influence features flamenco, Chinese melodies, and Gypsy music. Concertmaster Terrie Baune will lead the string section and play Chinese Folk Song Suite, an interesting piece during which the orchestra breaks out in a song-like chant. Baune has been the concertmaster of symphonies in San Francisco and a member of several professional orchestras. The North State Symphony comprises orchestral musicians, top-level university students, and full-time professional musicians. This is the third season the orchestras of Chico and Redding have combined forces to create the North State Symphony. "Our level of performance and the difficulty and interest of the music keep improving," said maestro Kyle Wiley Pickett. The Folk Influence will be presented Sept. 13 at 7:30 pm in Laxson Auditorium and Sept. 14 at 7:30 pm in the Redding Convention Center. North State Symphony concerts are presented jointly by CSU, Chico's Department of Music and School of the Arts, and by the North State Symphony Association. Season tickets for the four performances are available through Sept. 12 at the University Box Office.
