Up Front

Kaiser Named Trustee

Kathleen Kaiser, Sociology, was appointed to the California State University board of trustees on Aug. 8 by Governor Gray Davis. The governor appoints a faculty trustee from nominees proposed by the CSU Academic Senate. The board of trustees is the governing body for the CSU system; the faculty trustee serves for two years. Kaiser is also the chair of the CSU General Education Advisory Committee and has been elected to the CSU academic senate four times.

Kaiser, who came to CSU, Chico in 1972, is the director of the applied sociology internship program and a member of the CSU, Chico academic senate. She has won several grants for research, including funds from the California Youth Authority and the Riverside and Placer County Offices of Education. Kaiser is an active mentor for honors students in the major and students who participate in student paper competitions.

Kaiser specializes in sociology of sexuality, deviant behavior, sports, and applied sociology. She earned her bachelor of arts degree from Florida State University and a master of arts and doctorate from Duke University.

CSU, Chico Moves Up in Top Western Universities

California State University, Chico moved up one spot to third among top public master's universities in the West in U.S. News and World Report's America's Best Colleges 2004 rankings, which were published Aug. 25.

CSU, Chico was ranked fourth in 2003, third in 2002, fifth in 2001, and sixth in 2000 in the same category.

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo is still ranked first; Sonoma State University is fourth; California State Polytechnic University, Pomona is fifth; and CSU, Humboldt is seventh.

Among both public and private Western master's universities, CSU, Chico moved up one spot to 29th in the top tier of schools. Only CSU, Sonoma and CSU, Pomona are also ranked, 30th and 32nd, respectively. Other CSUs are in the second, third, or fourth tiers. Private universities dominate the list.
