Oct. 27 Forum for National Disability Awareness Month

A public forum, "Campus Commitment to Access," hosted by the campus ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Committee, will take place on Monday, Oct. 27, 2-4 p.m. in the Faculty and Staff Dining Room at Selvester's Café-by-the-Creek.

The ADA committee meets monthly to address issues of access for all campus employees, students, and guests before those issues become problems. Access issues include programmatic and electronic issues as well as physical issues.

Currently, the focus of those working on access, which includes the Web Accessibility Committee that receives input from the ADA committee, is to improve Web and WebCT access. While technology has made life easier for people with certain disabilities, it can be difficult for those with visual impairments who rely on screen reader software. Web pages can be easily read by screen readers if they are designed using specific guidelines.

During the forum, videos of progressive access solutions will be shown. Committee members will be available to exchange information and hear your concerns or about access and accommodations. For more information, call Nancy Hermanson at 898-5959 or Ingrid Cordes at 898-5436.
