Cozy: New Works by Sue Whitmore
The Humanities Center Gallery is exhibiting Cozy, new works by Sue Whitmore, Art and Art History, now through Nov. 26. Whitmore writes: "In the past, I have explored forms found in nature and biology in my ceramic sculpture. The work exhibited in Cozy is a departure in that it incorporates knitted and crocheted 'found' elements inspired by my relocation to Chico and the new responsibilities of teaching, house buying, studio building -- the putting together an environment in which to live and work. "The knitted objects were gleaned from Chico's thrift stores and yard sales. The original inspiration was a crocheted teacup and saucer: an absurd object that connected immediately to my own attempt to become domestically useful. A later find of a knitted tea cozy provoked my fixation on finding yarn-made objects that were made to disguise the object being covered. I have forced, cajoled and enveloped the ceramic forms with these found objects. "The work exhibited in Cozy is a celebration of the fuzzy area between art and kitsch." Whitmore earned her M.F.A. from the University of Washington and has studied, taught, and had residencies in Italy, California, Colorado, Maine, Montana, Oregon, and Hawaii. She has had solo exhibitions in Illinois and California, most recently with Garage Science at Sebastian Ward in Berkeley. She has been in dozens of group exhibitions, most recently with 2003 California Clay at The Artery in Davis. See Exhibitions for reception information and gallery hours. Thomasin Saxe |
