Publications

James Matray, History, had "The Korean War: A Historiographical Essay" published in A Companion to American Foreign Relations by Blackwell in 2003. He also had a review of the Korean Military Institute's The Korean War, Vol. 3, published in the May 2003 issue of The Journal of Asian Studies; a review of Robert L. Bateman's No Gun Ri: A Military History of the Korean War Incident published in the April 2003 issue of The Journal of Military History; and a review of Edward A. Olsen's Toward Normalizing U.S.-Korea Relations: In Due Course? published in the 2003 issue of Korean Studies. In August, his third column about international issues appeared in Donga Ilbo, the Republic of Korea's second largest daily newspaper.

Kristina Schriver, Communication Arts and Sciences, had "Rhetorical Pathologies and Gender Difference: An Ideological Examination of Cultural Discourse in Faulkner v. the Citadel" published in Women's Studies in Communication, Vol. 26, No. 1, 2003.

Cindy Wolff, Biological Sciences, graduate students Vaness Gyovai and Kathleen Ferran, and dietetic intern Jamie Gonzales had "Family Dietary and Activity Behaviors Associated with Overweight Risk Among Low Income Preschool Children" published in the California Journal of Health Promotion, Vol. 1, No. 2, 2003.

Grants and Contracts

Richard Holman, Construction Management, and Kristin Cooper-Carter, College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology, received $179,836 from CALFED to continue stream restoration research on Reeds, Redbank, Brickyard, and Deer Creeks in Tehama County.

Cindy Wolff, Biological Sciences, received $196,989 from the Butte County Children and Family Commission in support of the OPT for Fit Kids overweight prevention and treatment program.

Xueli Zou, Physics, received $92,000 from the National Science Foundation to develop activity kits for introductory physics classrooms. The kits include hands-on activities with feedback from test kits.

Awards and Activities

Darryl Eisele, Education, delivered four presentations of "Nuevos elementos metodologicos sobre escritura: elemento clave en enseñanza-aprendizaje" ("New Methodological Elements Regarding Writing: The Key to Teaching and Learning") in Spanish at the Forging Educators with Excellence conference at Lago de Yojoa, Honduras, in September.

Stacy Schaefer, Anthropology, co-organized the session "The Space Between: Participatory Strategies in Shamanic Studies" for the 51st International Congress of Americanists in Santiago, Chile, in July, and presented "Experiential Aspects and Strategies in Fieldwork Among the Huichol Indians and members of the Native American Church."

Ela Thurgood, English, co-authored and presented "Phonetic Realizations of Polish Geminate Affricates" at the 15th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences in Barcelona, Spain, in August.
