Duane Knudson, Physical Education and Exercise Science, co-authored "Development and Evaluation of a Biomechanics Concept Inventory," published in Sports Biomechanics, Vol. 2, No. 2, 2003.

Roland Lamarine and Victor Sbarbaro, Health and Community Service, had "Attitudes and Practices of University Health Education Faculty Related to Alternative Medicine" published in the Californian Journal of Health Promotion, Vol. 1, No. 3, 2003. Sbarbaro and students David Duffy and Kurt Osterland had "HEAD (Health Education Across the Disciplines): Addressing Intervention Strategies Across the Disciplines for Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs, and Addiction" published in the same issue.

Michael Magliari, History, had a review of James L. Hunt's Marion Butler and American Populism published in Agricultural History, fall 2003.

Rita Mulholland and Michelle Cepello, Professional Studies in Education, had "Incorporating Pupil Assessment into Teacher Preparation" published in Academic Quarterly, Vol. 7, No. 3, 2003.

Turhon Murad, Anthropology, had "The Skull" published in The Encyclopedia of the Neurological Sciences by Academic Press in 2003.

James Owens, Glenn Gomes, and James Morgan, Management, had "The New EU Directive Prohibiting Sexual Harassment in the Workplace: Reflections from Across the Pond" published in the Proceedings of the June 2003 Conference on International Human Resource Management and had "Sexual Harassment in the European Union: The Dawning of a New Era" accepted for publication in a forthcoming edition of the SAM Advanced Management Journal.

Mark Tomita, Health and Community Service, had Say It with a CD: Creating CD-ROMs for Effective Communication and a companion CD-ROM published by ToucanEd Publishing in 2003.

Jeff Trailer and James Morgan, Management, had "What Intuitive Physics Reveals About the Failure of Intuition" accepted for publication in the 2003 volume of the Journal of American Academy of Business. Morgan also had "Legal Studies in Business: Toward Realizing Its Potential in the New Millennium" published in the most recent edition of the Journal of Education for Business.

Grants and Contracts

Kristin Cooper-Carter, College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology, and Len Fisk, Computer Science, received $128,000 from the State of California Resources Agency to design and develop a Web-based search engine that will house all environmental funding from state, federal, and private foundations.

Awards and Activities

Ann Bykerk-Kauffman, Geosciences, presented "Convection: An Excellent Theme for an Earth Science Course for Prospective Elementary School Teachers" at the 115th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in Seattle in November.

Maurice Mow, Civil Engineering, was elected 2003-2004 chair of the Committee on Curricula and Accreditation of the national American Society of Civil Engineers, a committee responsible for training, assigning, and evaluating civil engineering program evaluators for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Patricia Smiley, Physical Education and Exercise Science, received an Award for Exemplary Online Instruction for PHED 152, Introduction to Dance, at the CELT Awards Presentations Luncheon in September.

Cindy Wolff's, Biological Sciences, OPT for Fit Kids and OPT/Sierra Cascade Nutrition and Activity Consortium goals of pediatric overweight prevention and fitness have been adopted by the Chico Rotary for an 18-month campaign, from January 2004 through June 2005, with assistance from the OPT/SCNAC-sponsored local Growing Healthy Children Coalition members.

Morgan Sullivan, Geosciences, presented "Tectonic Controls on Sedimentation and Stacking Patterns: An Example from the Ridge Basin, Southern California" at the 115th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in Seattle in November.

Graham Thurgood, English, was appointed to a three-year term on the Linguistic Society of America's Committee on Endangered Languages and Their Preservation 2004-2007.
