Chico Performances Claims 2003 Mayor's Award

The Chico City Council has voted to award the 2003 Mayor's Award for Achievement in the Arts to Chico Performances of California State University, Chico. Created in 1996 to honor the memory of former Arts Commissioner Joseph Kaveney and to support the National Arts and Humanities month of October, the award is annually presented to individuals, businesses, and/or nonprofit organizations that have made significant contributions to art in the Chico community.

"Chico Performances was chosen as one of this year's recipients because of the quality of artists they present at Chico State, and what the bringing of those artists to the North Valley means in terms of Chico's cultural community," said Mary Gardner, the City of Chico's arts projects coordinator.

"We are honored to be recognized by the City of Chico for the contribution Chico Performances makes to our community," said Dan DeWayne, director of Chico Performances and University Public Events. "We are pleased to bring artists and speakers from around our world to introduce us all to ideas, cultures, and different points of view. We very much appreciate the recognition and support of the City of Chico."

Mayor Maureen Kirk will present the award on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 5:30 pm in the lobby of the Chico Municipal Center building at 411 Main Street.

Past recipients of this award include individual winners Louise Phillippi, Catherine Sullivan Sturgeon, Patrick Kopp, Dan DeWayne, Robin Trenda, Annie August, Jerril Dean Kopp, DNA, Rudy Giscombe, and Ira Latour.

Past winners in the nonprofit organization category include 1078 Gallery in collaboration with Boys and Girls Club of Chico, Chico Open Board Project in collaboration with Nancy Lindahl, and the Field.
