Good-bye to the 'Used Book Maniac'
Bob Paolone, associate director of academic support for the Associated Students Bookstore, will retire on Nov. 14 after 36 years. From the beginning, Paolone put the needs of students first when it came to ordering and purchasing books. Over the last 36 years, his colleagues estimate Paolone has facilitated the purchase and sale of 7,649,643 textbooks. When Paolone started at the A.S. Bookstore on Sept. 1, 1968, $58,626 buyback dollars were returned to the students. Last year, the amount of money returned to students was $1,354,341. Over the years, more than $24 million has been returned to CSU, Chico students. No wonder they call Paolone the "Used Book Maniac." According to a 1984 interview with the Chico News & Review, "Paolone likens his job to a 'giant scavenger hunt,' since he may have to buy from several companies in order to find enough used books to meet the expected enrollment of any given class." By filling the shelves of the textbook area with 50 percent used books, Paolone kept the best interest of students as his primary focus. He leaves the A.S. Bookstore with one of the best and most envied used textbook programs in the nation. The retirement reception for Paolone will take place Thursday, Nov. 13, 2-4 pm, in BMU 314. Kristina Cave
