Reward Offered for Art Pieces Stolen from TrinityThree pieces of art, two paintings by Peter Jodaitis and one sculpture by Sue Whitmore, were stolen from the Humanities Center Gallery in Trinity 100 on two different occasions. The two watercolors by Jodaitis were part of his Women and Children series. The paintings were discovered missing on the morning of Oct. 29, on the day the show was scheduled to be taken down. The 18"-square ceramic piece from Whitmore's show COZY was taken the night of Nov. 1. Gallery director Thomasin Saxe said that the two paintings were valued at $500 each, and the sculpture at $1,200. Although there are hundreds of people walking through the gallery each week, this is the first time anything has been stolen. Saxe has been working with the University Police, Facilities Management and Services, and other concerned faculty and staff on campus to ensure the gallery's future safety. The College of Humanities and Fine Arts has decided to lock the gallery at 5 pm each day and keep it closed on the weekends, except for special events, when the space will be open as usual. Dean Sarah Blackstone said, "This gallery is a very important part of the life of the community and the campus, and we want to do everything we can to ensure that the space continues to be used, and at the same time, protect the artists. Locking the building at 5 pm will cause an inconvenience for faculty and staff who use the building after those hours, so we appreciate everyone's cooperation in making this policy work." A reward is offered for information leading to the return of the artworks. Please call the University Police at x5372 if you have any information.
