Briefly NotedJewish Studies Faculty Papers AcceptedThe Jewish studies faculty will have a strong showing on panels at the 2004 Western Jewish Studies Conference in San Diego in March. Sam Edelman will present "The Rhetoric of Reconciliation versus the Rhetoric of Recidivism: Jewish Christian Dialogue in the 21st Century," on a panel discussing Mel Gibson's upcoming film The Passion. Daniel Veidlinger will present "So, You're a Doctor of Buddhist Studies? Jewish Professor of Buddhism" on a panel discussing the "Jewish-Buddhist Encounter." Speech and Debate Team Wins SweepstakesThe Individual Events members of the Speech and Debate Team brought home a first-place sweepstakes award in the four-year university division at the Roadrunner Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament at Butte Community College held Oct. 25. Kristina Schriver is the director of the Speech and Debate Program. Foundation Appoints New MembersThe University Foundation Board of Governors has appointed two new members, Carolyn Lundberg and Bob Lindscheid. Together with her husband, Lundberg has contributed to the success of a variety of university programs. Most recently, she served as co-chair of the Warren Alumni Reception Center Renovation Committee. Lindscheid, a 1976 CSU, Chico graduate, has served as president of the CSU, Chico Alumni Association and currently serves as president of the California State University Alumni Council. The University Foundation is a nonprofit philanthropic organization that administers the university gift and endowment program. Field Day with MathFourth, fifth, and sixth graders from Jay Partridge Elementary School will spend Nov. 14 on campus participating in the inaugural Mathematics Early Field Experience, sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Liberal studies students in MATH 50A, 50B, 112, and 113 will engage their elementary school partners in activities designed to be enjoyable and to inspire interest in mathematics. Sessions will include concepts in probability, geometry, and algebra. Future events are planned for each fall and spring semester. Cruisin' With the 'CatsThe Department of Athletics, along with the Wildcat Century Club, will host the annual "Cruisin' With the 'Cats" dinner and auction on Dec. 5 in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium. Proceeds will benefit the CSU, Chico Athletic Scholarship Fund. There will be live and silent auctions, with items for bid including a Mexican cruise, a trip to Cancun, Sacramento Kings tickets, and golf in Las Vegas. Call x5179 for ticket information. Water Ski Team Sixth in NationYes, CSU, Chico has a water ski team. And, yes, they are good. CSU, Chico placed sixth at the National Collegiate Water Ski Championships in Austin, Texas, on Oct. 18. The team was bested only by those with scholarship programs.
