Environmental Lecture Series: World Expert on Atmospheric Research

Stephen H. Schneider, recognized as one of the world's leading experts in atmospheric research, will speak on April 8 and 9 as part of the Rawlins Environmental Lecture Series.

On Thursday, April 8, Schneider will present a public lecture at 7 pm in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium. A reception will follow.

On Friday, April 9, at 4 pm in Holt 170, Schneider will give a slightly more technical talk, still suitable for anyone interested. A reception will precede the lecture at 3:30 pm. This lecture is part of the Omicron Theta Epsilon Seminar series. Both lectures are free.

Schneider is a professor in the Biological Sciences Department at Stanford University and the former department director and head of Advanced Study Project at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado.

Schneider's books include The Genesis Strategy: Climate Change and Global Survival; The Coevolution of Climate and Life; Global Warming: Are We Entering The Greenhouse Century? and Laboratory Earth: The Planetary Gamble We Can't Afford to Lose.

Schneider has been presenting the dangers of human-induced climate change for more than two decades. "No honest scientist can assert with total confidence it [global temperature changes] will turn out to be mild or catastrophic. But a dozen scientific assessments have shown that the 'good for you' and 'end of the world' scenarios are the two lowest probability outcomes. Some benefits are likely, but so too are a range of risks -- especially for natural systems and in poorer countries," wrote Schneider for the Web site Edge: The World Question Center.

James Pushnik, who currently holds the Rawlins Chair for Environmental Literacy, said, "We are fortunate to have someone of Schneider's caliber and scientific standing to speak on our campus."
