Sonoma Dean to Fill College of Communication and Education Post
Phyllis Fernlund, dean of the School of Education at Sonoma State University,
has been named dean of the College of Communication and Education.
Fernlund will begin her new duties Aug. 1, 2004. She replaces Stephen
King, dean of the College of Communication since 1987, and dean of the
CME since 1992, when it was first formed.
Fernlund has been a dean at Sonoma State since 1997. Prior to that, she
was acting dean of the College of Education at California State University,
San Bernardino from 1995 to 1997. She also served as chair of the Department
of Secondary and Vocational Education at CSU, San Bernardino from 1992
to 1995.
“We are fortunate to have attracted someone of Dr. Fernlund’s
background and experience,” said Scott McNall, provost and vice
president for academic affairs. “She brings a deep knowledge of
K–12 education to the campus, as well as important national connections
in that area. She is also a recognized scholar in her field and a seasoned
administrator in the CSU. She is personable and energetic, and I look
forward to working with her. She is a strong and important addition to
the administrative team.”
Fernlund is looking forward to her new position. “I am very pleased
to be coming to CSU, Chico and working with faculty, students, and staff
in the College of Communication and Education, as well as many others
on campus and in the community,” she said. “We will continue
to move forward with programs in the college that apply students’
university education to internships and activities connected to their
future careers.”
Along with being a professor of education at Sonoma State and CSU, San
Bernardino, Fernlund has also taught at the University of Redlands, University
of California, Los Angeles, and Loyola University. She received her Ph.D.
in social science curriculum from Northwestern University. Her master’s
and bachelor’s degrees are both from the University of Illinois,
Urbana-Champaign.
Fernlund is co-author of Civics: Participating in our Democracy,
a popular eighth- and ninth-grade government and economics textbook, as
well as Using Technology in the Social Studies Classroom and
Social Studies in the Elementary School.
