An audience of over sixty, including parents, Mini-Corps students, and teachers were present on April 23 to hear young authors read their original work, a product of a semester-long program to improve reading and writing skills. CSU, Chico Mini-Corps with a Precollegiate Academic Development Program grant tutored k-12 students in the writing process.

The Northern California Writing Project, under the direction of Tom Fox, funded Rachel Tadeo, a fourth grade teacher from Parkview, to do two workshops on writing with the Mini-Corps and elementary students. The Mini-Corps students are part of a teacher-training program, directed by Betty Peterson, that will prepare them to work with migrant students.

Peterson said, "The pride reflected in the faces of the young authors as they shared their stories made all of the hard work and extra effort to organize such an event worthwhile. The Mini-Corps/PAD students were very pleased with the fruit of their labor and shared such comments as, `The students looked so proud and happy to see how much we appreciated them…It was fun…I can't wait until next year! "The stories [themselves] were a learning experience for me."
