The Chico State Wildcat Summer Day Camp Program recently signed an agreement to establish a consortium of universities to provide summer day camp services for children of military personnel and the Department of Defense worldwide.

Al Jackson, Department of Recreation and Parks Management, and Gail Hildebrand, Sponsored Programs, have operated the Wildcat Summer Day camp Program for the past seven years. A similar program, Camp Adventure, at the University of Northern Iowa, has operated for the past fourteen years, with sub-divisions in Florida and Georgia universities. Jackson and the director of Camp Adventure, Chris Edginton, undertook creating the consortium to improve the quality and professional practices of such programs.

The summer camp program will provide educationally based service-learning opportunities for university students. The new consortium has hired 600 students from the four campuses for this summer to work with over 8000 children daily. The students will receive a stipend, air fare, and lodging. The program locations for this summer include England, Spain, Italy, Russia, Germany, Korea, Japan, and China. Russia and China are both operated by private educational institutions rather than on military bases.
