Honorary Doctorate to be Awarded at Commencement

Savio Lau-Yuen Woo, Ph.D., honorary doctoral degree recipient, Saturday, May 23, 1998

Savio L.Y. Woo is the A.B. Ferguson Professor and director of the Musculoskeletal Research Center in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

A graduate of Chico State College in 1965 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, he received his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Bioengineering in 1971 from the University of Washington.

Woo has been elected to the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Science; the National Academy of Engineering; and the Academia Sinica. He received the GOTS-Beiersdorf Outstanding Scientific Achievement Research Award in 1996 and the IOC Olympic Prize in 1998.

Woo serves on numerous advisory boards, including that of our College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology. He has delivered over five hundred lectures at conferences worldwide, written nearly one hundred book chapters and monographs, edited or co-edited thirteen books, and published over two hundred refereed journal articles.
