Glenn Kendall Is 97
Glenn Kendall, former president of Chico State, celebrated his
97th birthday on September 16, 1998. President Manuel A. Esteban and a
group of Kendall's friends from the university visited him for a surprise
birthday party the next day. Here, in an exchange of presidential humor,
Kendall and Esteban discuss presidential salaries. In 1950, when the
state superintendent of schools was encouraging Kendall to come to Chico
as president, he was asked what he was making in his current
position. "$7800," replied Kendall.
"I'll raise you 2 (two hundred, that is)," said the superintendent. It
was a deal, and Kendall came to Chico and stayed until his retirement in 1966.
