This fall students will begin migrating to a new, full-featured Netscape electronic messaging system, which will simplify communications among students, faculty, and staff and provide students with many additional features.
The Netscape platform will provide a university-wide solution that improves performance and functionality, while not relying on academic colleges to provide services.
The new system features the following
Easy exchange of documents to/from faculty on the Microsoft Exchange platform
A directory (address book) containing CSU, Chico student, faculty, and staff e-mail addresses
Ease in obtaining an e-messaging account
A Web browser as the standard e-mail client
Web page publishing available on server
A Unix timeshare account for Web page or program development.
Faculty will benefit from
A directory containing CSU, Chico student e-mail addresses
Built-in e-mail address groups defined for Microsoft Exchange which will enable faculty to e-mail students in selected groups.
The Student Help Desk staff will have increased account maintenance tools to help solve problems with the new system. Once the migration to Netscape and Exchange are complete, remote access users will need only one user ID and password to sign on to a modem pool and access their messaging system.
Beginning this semester, new student e-mail accounts will be set up on the new system first, with existing accounts phased in gradually. It is planned that all existing accounts (except for students in the College of ECT) will have moved to the new system by the end of the spring semester.
