A reception preceding the production of La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi is scheduled for Feb. 11 at 5:15 p.m. in Trinity 100. The event will raise funds for the Maria S. Haynes Italian Studies Scholarship and promote Italian culture in the North Valley.
The late Maria Haynes, a popular CSU, Chico professor for more than 30 years, was the founder of the University's Italian program. Haynes was well-known for her promotion of Italian culture and was responsible for the popular Summer in Florence program.
In fall 1998, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures renamed the Italian Studies scholarship for Haynes. The scholarship has already received a substantial amount of funding from Haynes' son, Charles, and is designed to benefit students interested in Italian language and cultural studies.
The reception is sponsored by the Italian Studies Advisory Council and includes Italian foods, wines, and desserts and a ticket to the opera at 7:30 p.m. in Harlan Adams Theatre.
The cost of the event is $20 general and $15 for students. For information contact Phyllis Duarte at 898-5388.
