Tears, Hugs, and Laughter for Loretta

Loretta Metcalf is retiring after sixteen years with the Educational Opportunity Program. A celebration was held on Wednesday, February 17 at the Metcafe, owned by Loretta and her husband, Homer Metcalf. (Homer MetCalf retired in 1998.) The cafe was filled with friends and colleagues giving her accolades—for her spirit, passion, willingness to be a mother and friend, and commitment to students.

Pat Patterson (in picture at right), Psychological Counseling, said, "I liken Loretta to a hurricane—she stirs things up and blows them around and the outcome is that she makes them better! She has fought for the rights of those less empowered and kept those of us around her honest. Loretta is the person I would like to be stranded on an island with, because I'm sure she would watch my back!"

Metcalf came to CSU, Chico first as a re-entry student and single mother. She is retiring from the position of academic adviser for EOP. She and Homer and their large circle of family and friends are working full time making the Metcafe thrive as a downtown business.
