Ella Caroline Sapp

Ella Sapp, who was 100 years old, died Saturday, February 13, 1999.

Ella Sapp was born April 23, 1898, in Howland Flat, a mining community outside Oroville, to James and Caroline Huggan. At age sixteen, she was accepted to the Chico Normal School. She graduated in 1916 with a teaching credential.

While at the Normal School, she attended socials hosted by Annie K. Bidwell at the Bidwell home.

She worked at various one-room school houses at a starting pay of $75 a month, and she was later the principal of Shasta Union Elementary. She taught for forty-three years in Butte County and Chico.

She donated the Ella C. Sapp House on the corner of 3rd and Normal to CSU, Chico. The house is now used for alumni and advancement offices. In addition to donating the Sapp House, she started a scholarship fund at CSU, Chico.KM
