Jane Kerlinger, Geosciences, and , Management, had their article "Protecting Common Interests of Full- and Part-Time Faculty" published in the Fall 1998 issue of Thought & Action: The NEA Higher Education Journal.
Michael Leitner, Recreation and Parks Management, had two articles accepted for publication in Tourism Recreation Research, Vol. 24, No. 1: "Promoting Peace Through Intergenerational Tourism" and "Enabling Tourism for Low Functioning Elders and Their Spouses."
Irv Schiffman, Political Science, published "Ecosystem Management and Property Rights" in Ecosystem Management: A Social Science Perspective, Kendall/Hunt, 1998. The second edition of Schiffman's Alternative Techniques for Managing Growth has been published by the Institute for Governmental Studies at the University of California at Berkeley.
Marc Siegall, Management, had "Capital Budgeting Analysis in Wholly Owned Subsidiaries" accepted for publication in the refereed Journal of Financial and Strategic Decisions.
David Simcox, Recreation and Parks Management, and co-authors Dr. Ervin Zube, University of Arizona, and Dr. Steven Friedman, University of Minnesota, had their article "Desert Riparian Landscapes: Values and Change, 1981_1996" published in the journal Landscape and Urban Planning.
Awards and Activities
Susan Avanzino, Communication Arts and Sciences, Aaron Bor, Communication Design, and Ruth Guzley, Communication Arts and Sciences, were awarded first place in a juried competition for the Courses, Curricula, and Administration Division of the Broadcast Education Association for their paper "Distributed Tutored Video Instruction: Media Students' Motivation and Perception of Effectiveness, Learning, and Facilitation."
Paul A. Feldhaus, professor emeritus, Art and Art History, exhibited his linocut Confrontation in the Desert in Print Types at Indian Hills Community College, Ottumwa, IA, and his linocut Guess Who Gets the Last Piece of Cake? in A Strange Vision at Brazosport College, Lake Jackson, TX.
Paul Friedlander, Music, had his work with teachers on curriculum development and pedagogy highlighted in the cover story of the January 1999 issue of Teacher Magazine. Based on this work, he has been invited to make the opening presentation to the National Media Education Conference in Minneapolis/St. Paul in June.
Madeline M. Keaveney, Communication Arts and Sciences, presented "Teaching Health Communication" at the annual meeting of the Western States Communication Association in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in February, where she received an award as one of two WSCA Master Teachers for 1999. She also organized a panel for the meeting on "Using Interviewing as an Intercultural Communication Tool" featuring graduate students Allyson Satterlund, Tomoko Makawa, and Peggy Chen-Lin.
Frank Li, English, presented his paper titled "The Origins and Development of Chinese Classifiers: A Grammaticization Perspective" at the Linguistics Society annual conference in Berkeley in February.
