A reception was held at 5 p.m., March 18, in Trinity Hall in honor of Shimon Peres, and to recognize the first scholarship awarded by the new Modern Jewish and Israel Studies Program at CSU, Chico, coordinated by Sam Edelman.

The first program scholarship was presented by Edelman and Peres to Earl Wilson Jessee, a junior in the Communication Design program, who is taking a minor in Modern Jewish and Israel Studies. The scholarship was made possible by a donation of the Koret Foundation.

Jessee is a former President's Scholarship recipient and graduate of the General Studies Thematic Honors Program. Edelman also announced that a cooperative systemwide bachelor's degree program was being established in Jewish Studies, with CSU, Chico in a key leadership role. The CSU, Chico Hillel organization was well represented at the ceremonies with many students and their faculty and community advisers and supporters taking part.
