Pianist Wins World Prize


Concert pianist Caren Levine, Music, was recently awarded first prize of a debute recital at Carnegie Hall for the 1999-2000 concert season at the highly regarded Artist's International Competition in New York City, held March 20-23. Levine will perform at the recital with David Griffiths, clarinet, and Evan Lewis, bassoon.

"This is one of the most prestigious competitions in the world," said James Bankhead, chair, Department of Music.

Levine received her Master of Music degree from the Julliard School in 1994 and is currently completing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Julliard. Honors and awards she has received include the Tilden Prize National Flute Competition Accompanying Award in 1996, the Tanglewood Music Center Accompanying Fellowship in 1994-95, and the Peabody Conservatory Prize in Chamber Music in 1992.

The Carnegie Hall trio will also perform at CSU, Chico on April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center, room 134.
