Byron Jackson Named Vice Provost for Academic AffairsPolitical science professor Byron Jackson is the new vice provost for Academic Affairs and dean of Undergraduate Education at California State University, Chico. Jackson began his new duties earlier this month. He was interim vice provost from July 1 to September 1, 1999. He replaced Sara Armstrong, who returned to her position in the psychology department. Jackson was associate dean in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences,1996-98. He has been on the political science faculty at CSU, Chico since 1974. The vice provost position is central to the development of all academic programs, with special responsibilities for the honors, liberal studies, multicultural and gender studies and general studies thematic programs. "I am delighted that Dr. Jackson has accepted this posi-tion," said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Scott McNall. "He brings to the position an enormous amount of experience. He is well respected by his colleagues and is known for his commitment to the creation of high-quality programs. His depth of understanding of the institution and its students make him an ideal person to serve as a major leader in helping to make this one of the country's best comprehensive universities. The whole university will be well served by his appointment and his continued contributions." Jackson received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and did his undergraduate work at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Penn., in 1969. He is the author of The Encyclopedia of Public Policy, published by ABC-CLIO Inc. last June. -- JW
