"Opera Around the World"
Members of CSU, Chico's Opera Workshop will preview songs they will perform during their upcoming tour to China. The concert, aptly titled "Opera Around the World," will be presented one evening only -- Saturday, October 30, 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre. A number of works will be sung during the concert, including excerpts from Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado, Strauss' The Gypsy Baron, Donizetti's L'Eliser D'Amore, and Pergolesi's The Perfect Wife. Lauren Shanley, who will portray Adina in L'Eliser D'Amore, said, "Opera has a lot of theatre in it; to be able to convey a character, you need to be able to act it as well as sing it." Opera Workshop is composed of Chico State and Butte College students as well as community members. Opera Workshop director Ying Yeh, who was born in China, said her students work very hard, and she is looking forward to "showing them the real China." Opera Workshop's tour of China takes place November 18-25. -- Courtesy HFA
