lMeredith Kelley, Financial Aid Office
Meredith Kelley, who became director of the Financial Aid Office in August,
received a warm welcome to CSU, Chico. “Everybody has been incredibly
helpful and friendly,” she said. Kelley previously worked at California
Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo as assistant director of
operations in the Financial Aid Office. She has worked in financial aid
since 1986, and was an employee at Cal Poly since 1981.
Kelley completed a master’s degree in education at Cal Poly, with
an emphasis in counseling and guidance in 1994. She earned a bachelor’s
degree in business finance at New York Regents College in Albany.
The Financial Aid Office has 24 full-time staff and 15 student staff.
“I enjoy providing opportunities for the staff to grow in their
positions,” said Kelley.
For the bottom line on financial aid, Kelley provided these figures: for
the 2002–2003 academic year, the CSU, Chico Financial Aid Office
provided $66.6 million to 9,200 students. In other words, for the spring
2003 semester, 65 percent of CSU, Chico students received financial aid.
“As director, I’m a little removed from direct student contact,
but the goals are the same—to make it easier to get through school
and help students succeed. I like looking at problems and streamlining
operations so that we can make our service to our students better.”
Kelley replaces Annette Edwards, who left the position to pursue a career
in education.
David Stephen, University Housing and Food Service
David Stephen became director of University Housing and Food Service
in November, replacing Eddie Bankston, who had held the position for 11
years prior to accepting a position with University of California, Berkeley.
Stephen came to Chico from Akron, Ohio, where he was director of residential
life and housing at the University of Akron. Prior to that, he was director
of housing and university food services at the University of Washington.
“The UHFS staff are dedicated, competent, and committed to supporting
each other in serving residence hall students. I am honored to be part
of this highly respected team,” said Stephen.
Stephen earned a doctorate in education in 1982 from Oregon State Univer-sity,
where he also earned a master’s degree in education. He has an M.A.
from University of Redlands and a B.S. from Northern Arizona University.
UHFS is responsible for housing and food service for 1,761 student residents
in seven residential communities. The UHFS staff includes 40 full-time
employees, 51 resident advisors, and 150 student assistants.
During his eight years as director at the University of Akron, Stephen
oversaw renovation and expansion of resident housing. “Chico State
desires to undertake similar work in the years ahead, and I want to be
a part of that process,” said Stephen.
