lThis month the Business and Finance Super I Team (about 50 managers
and supervisors in Business and Finance) was paid a house call by the
doctor. Dr. Aldebra Schroll, that is. Schroll is a graduate of CSU, Chico
and a new physician in Chico. The Office of Faculty and Staff Assistance
(FSA) hosted the program.
Schroll had vital information about dealing with stress. She reminded
the audience that
• Stress may cause loss of appetite or consumption of high calorie
foods
• Stress can cause heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and
anxiety
• Exercising three times weekly 30–45 minutes at a time is
equivalent to the benefits of many medications prescribed for depression
and anxiety
Stress has been an accepted condition of our work lives for years. Beverly
Ford, director of FSA, pointed out that the current budget situation places
even more stress on each of us. “If ever there was a time to understand
the effects of chronic stress to the body and the ultimate impact on the
workplace, it is now,” said Ford.
In addition to Schroll’s presentation, Lory Salberg, WorkLife counselor
from FSA, presented information regarding healthy ways to address workplace
challenges during transitions and other stressful changes.
Kimberly Jensen, director of the new 10,000 Step Program, available through
a special grant from Recreational Sports, discussed the walking program
as one of several opportunities availale to faculty and staff through
the Promotion of Health Program.
Vice President of Business and Finance Dennis Graham spoke about the importance
of health: “Each of us needs to be healthy—for our families
at home and our extended family at work. Sometimes we are not aware of
all the changes taking place in our lives, especially the small changes
that add up to big impacts. Wellness affects not just each of us individually,
but all those surrounding us. Be-sides that, it makes good business sense
to stay well!”
