Illegal Filesharing on ResNet

Now that the academic year is well under way, we would like to take this time to remind all users of ResNet about the consequences of illegal filesharing.

As you may know, downloading or sharing copyrighted material (such as movies or music) from your computer without the permission of the copyright holder is illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (DMCA).

It is also a violation of the campus computing Acceptable Use Policy. As a user of ResNet, you should take a moment to read it over. The policy can be found at:

http://www.csuchico.edu/stcp/about/aup.shtml

Please be aware, when you use programs such as LimeWire, Ares and BitTorrent to share or download copyrighted material (such as a song in mp3 format) you are violating the DMCA and may face fines or legal action.

Copyright holders actively monitor for, and record, when a computer is used to download or share copyrighted material illegally. These organizations are able to record information that uniquely identifies you and will allow them to bring a civil lawsuit against you, which can result in a significant financial burden.

In the long run, it's much cheaper to purchase copyrighted material legally than to risk paying thousands of dollars for a lawsuit!

Use services such as iTunes, Ruckus and Amazon.com to legally purchase music, television shows, movies and video games.

If you have any questions, please contact the Student Computing helpdesk.
