2008-2009 Learning Outcomes
Student Activities Office (SAO) has chosen several dimensions of outcome learning as published by the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS2008). SAO selected the following dimensions as being the most critical to assess for the student life area.
Critical Thinking
Self-understanding/awareness
Effective Leadership
Understanding and Appreciation of Diversity
Sense of Civic Responsibility
Maintaining Health and Wellness
Meaningful Interpersonal Relationships
Effective Reasoning
SAO will measure student growth and development as it relates to the aforementioned eight dimensions. To this end, SAO will test the following during the 2008-2009 academic year:
- That 70% of first time freshman students who complete AlcoholEdu will be able to demonstrate protective behaviors, as determined by the AlcoholEdu post survey.
- That 75% of the Campus Drug and Alcohol Education Center (CADEC) substance abuse seminar students will demonstrate improved understanding of the link between alcohol/substance abuse and risks/consequences of policies/laws in the community, as determined by the AlcoholEdu post survey
- That 75% of students who participated in the Diversity Summit will indicate an increased knowledge of other cultures different from their own, as determined by the Student Voice Survey.
- That 75% of students who participated in the Diversity Summit will demonstrate improvement in their ability to interact across cultural groups, as determined by the Student Voice survey.
- That 90% of the student staff in the Cross-Cultural Leadership Center (CCLC) will demonstrate improvement in their ability to interact with others in a productive way, as determined by the Student Voice survey.
- That 80% of the student leaders at the Greek Leadership Retreat will indicate improvement in their communication skills, as determined by the Student Voice leadership survey.
- That 80% of the student leaders at the Greek Leadership Retreat will demonstrate evidence in their ability to communicate clearly and concisely to other members, as determined by the Student Voice Leadership survey.
- That 80% of the Sport Clubs will demonstrate improvement in communication skills with individual club participants, as determined by the Student Voice Sport Club End of Season Evaluation survey.
- That 80% of the Sport Club coaches will demonstrate improvement in the ability to choose a competitive direction appropriate for club membership, as determined by the Student Voice Sport Cub End of Season Evaluation survey
- That 80% of the student organization presidents and treasurers will demonstrate improvement in their problem solving skills, as determined by the Student Voice Organization survey.
- That 80% of the student organizations presidents and treasurers will demonstrate improvement in their ability to plan programs and events, as determined by the Student Voice Organization survey.
- That 90% of the student staff in the CCLC will demonstrate an increase in their knowledge about their personal leadership style, as determined by the Student Voice Survey.
That 80% of the CCLC Advisory Board members will demonstrate an increased ability to lead their respective student organization in meeting its goals, as determined by the Student Voice Survey.
These learning outcomes are documented in the annual Student Activities report and on the Student Activities web site. The data is reviewed and interpreted by the Associate VP for Student Life, and the individual program directors for each area. The findings from the data are used to validate, redesign and refine the unit’s programs, services, processes and/or activities.
